A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

You may be thinking, “What’s with the famous painting of the guy in the bowler hat with the apple in front of his face?”

Well here’s the story behind it.  For starters it is called “The Son of Man” and was painted in 1964 by Belgian surrealist Rene Magritte as a self portrait.  In the full painting he is seen standing in front of a small wall with the sea and a cloudy sky in the background.  Some have speculated that the hovering green apple obscuring his face represents the loss of identity.  While Magritte was depressed and this is likely true, I like to think the apple is meant to evoke a sense of mystery, force one to imagine what lies beyond it and question why it is there.

As it relates to this blog you could say that the blog represents the apple in front of my face.  It is merely a digital facade obscuring my true identity.  Whatever you want to think I would like you to simply take it as inspiration to ask more questions in life, of yourself, of others, etc.  More on this in a future post…

“The name is believed to have derived from the modern businessman being the son of Adam (from the Abrahamic creation story) and the apple representing temptation with which one is still faced in the modern world.”  “The Son of Man” is privately owned.

In Magritte’s own words:

My painting is visible images which conceal nothing; they evoke mystery and, indeed, when one sees one of my pictures, one asks oneself this simple question, ‘What does that mean?’. It does not mean anything, because mystery means nothing either, it is unknowable.”

“Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see, but it is impossible. Humans hide their secrets too well….”

Week in Review 10/29 – 11/4

What a great week!  This will go down as one of my best weeks in 2007.  Here’s a quick recap.

The Red Sox swept the Rockies to win the World Series; went on to celebrate with a parade through Boston and to top it off Jonathan Papelbon made a hilarious appearance on Letterman.

*Update:  The “bedazzler” himself David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez soon fell suit with comical late night appearances of their own.

The Celtics won their season opener.

The Patriots defeated the Colt’s in their toughest game of the season which also happened to be the christening of HD on my new 42″ plasma.

Last, but certainly not least, on Friday NameMedia filed an S-1 with the SEC for a $172.5 million IPO.  Read more here:  http://www.redherring.com/Home/23100

It Begins

For a long time now I’ve been thinking about starting a blog but procrastination got the best of me.  Well, the time has come.  No more procrastinating.  No more thinking to myself, wow that is a great idea for a blog post.  It’s time to share my thoughts, views, ideas, rants, opinions, etc. simply for the sake of personal expression.

Over the coming days, weeks, months, years I plan to use this blog as a platform to tell my story, pose thought provoking questions, provide occasional reviews, and mostly just ramble about whatever thoughts are going through my head.

As I put my stamp on the world wide web I hope to spur some interesting conversation and maybe even leave you with some useful information.  I also hope to hear from as many people that read this as possible.  Leave me a comment anytime.

With that said, let the blogging begin.
